"Explaining Globalization" - Review And Evaluation
[ send me this report ]
3 pages in length. Attempting to escape the unending progression of the global community is akin to digging in sand: The more one tries to fight the sand's natural tendency to fall back into the hole, the more challenging it becomes to create the hole. This article illustrates how globalization has turned into a double-edged sword whereby its intent to improve global interface on a fundamental social, political and economic level has transformed into a viable and beneficial concept for only some of the global communities. Bibliography lists 1 source.

"Mortality is Not Relative": James Rachels' Views on the Theory of Cultural Relativism
[ send me this report ]
A 7 page exploration of Rachels beliefs in regard to what determines certain cultural practices and whether or not there are inherent rights and wrongs in those practices. More specifically, Rachels explores the question of whether morality is a phenomena that varies according to culture, whether different cultures do in fact operate under different moral codes. Rachels points out that many cultures even diverge greatly from our Western precepts of right and wrong. He is particularly interested in the theory of cultural relativism, that theory that demands that we view behavior and situations in a world context rather than from the closely defined views of one culture. Rachels sees both positives and negatives in that theory, however. No additional sources are listed.

"Racializing" in Middletown, New York
[ send me this report ]
An 8 page paper examining demographic data for a culturally and ethnically diverse suburb town, followed by a discussion of how culture and race are dealt with by the police, business owners, community leaders and other members of the community. Most of the population of 25,000 claims cultural, ethnic or racial identification with specific groups for a much greater diversity landscape than exhibited in most other towns of similar size. It appears that the preponderance of racial and ethic differences in Middletown prevents the town from being burdened with illogical racial biases and prejudices. The effect might not be the same in a town either larger or smaller than Middletown, but here at least it appears to work quite well. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

"Sidewalk" By Mitchell Duneier
[ send me this report ]
6 pages in length. Mitchell Duneier, a sociologist with a rather impressive curriculum vitae to his credit, spent five years of his otherwise privileged life keeping company with drunks, derelicts, drug addicts and the homeless on the sidewalks of New York's Greenwich Village. His purpose was not to exploit the individuals whose reason for being on these streets is to drum up whatever income they can by selling books and magazines; rather, it was to learn and understand why they were there. Many of the men with whom Duneier encountered were what one might consider as victims of society, those who were – for one reason or another – unable to assimilate themselves into the social norm; others, however, did not care to be involved with the stringent expectations of social norm and chose instead to seek out their living by way of this unique entrepreneurial approach. No additional sources cited.

"The Culture of Fear" -- Alive and Well in Australia and the U.S.
[ send me this report ]
This 4 page report discusses what author and sociologist Barry Glassner calls "The Culture of Fear." The premise of the report is that the amount of unrealistic fear that exists among the populations of some of the most developed nations of the world is most often directly related to the portrayal of horrific events by both the news and entertainment media. Two news reports related to a murder in Australia are used as examples. The concept of "moral panic" is also briefly discussed. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Like a swarm of unrelenting locust, a mismatched collection of outsiders converge upon southern California in the late 1930s – Hollywood to be exact - hell bent on reaching their unattainable dreams of fame and fortune in a place that – for some unknown reason – beckons them with promises it cannot keep. No additional sources cited.

"The Emperor's Giraffe" by Samuel M. Wilson
[ send me this report ]
A 5 page paper which examines the book "The Emperor's Giraffe" by Samuel M. Wilson as it relates to cultural assimilation. Wilson's book argues that contact between cultures often results in the discovery of commonalties, and later leads to assimilation. The assumption is examined. Bibliography lists 1 additional source.
