Freud and Human Nature.
[ send me this report ]
(5 pp) according to Freud (1930) human nature is "the struggle between Eros and Death, between the instinct of life and the instinct of destruction, as it works itself out in the human species. This struggle is what all life essentially consists of, and the evolution of civilization may therefore be described as the struggle for life of the human species. He adds that the sense of guilt is the most important problem in the development of civilization’ and that ‘the price we pay for our advance in civilization is a loss of happiness through the heightening of the sense of guilt’ Personal responses to this statement are given. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Freud as a Novelist
[ send me this report ]
A 12 page paper which discusses the concept of Freud's work reading like a novel. The works of Freud's that are used to illustrate this are his studies involving "Rat Man" (Ernst Lanzer) and "Dora" (Ida Bauer). Freud was incredibly opinionated and in his case studies he often put in his own words, rather than the words of the subject, attempting to focus the text on one aspect or another of the study. In doing so, in light of the unique characters he studied, much of his case studies seemed to read like novels. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Freud's "Dora: An Analysis of a Case of Hysteria"
[ send me this report ]
An 8 page paper assessing Freud's famous first case that he labeled a "failure," though by today's standards it would not have been a failure at all and likely it would have been Dora's father in psychoanalysis rather than Dora. “Dora: An Analysis of a Case of Hysteria” (1963) is Freud’s account of the case of Ida Bauer, whose father brought to Freud seeking “cure” for her willful refusal to assist her father in securing the affections of his would-be mistress, specifically by yielding to the woman's husband's pursuit of young Dora. Dora was only 14 when the man – a sexual predator by today's standards – began behaving grossly inappropriately. The paper applauds Dora's strength of will and refusal to back away from her convictions. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Freud's "The Future of an Illusion"
[ send me this report ]
A 6 page discussion of this denouncement of religion. Freud contends that human behavior, even our thoughts and feelings, are determined by innate biologically rooted instincts and not by the artificial guidelines of religion. Our life instincts or “eros” include those that motivate such basic drives as sex, hunger and thirst are what is important. The author points out, however, that their are many reasons to disagree with Freud.
