Cost Effective Measures in Maintenance of Mental Health Treatments and Possible Alternative Therapies

This is a 7 page paper discussing cost effective measures in mental health treatment. The Surgeon General in the United States has issued a report which estimates that “one out of every five Americans suffers from some form of mental disorder with direct and indirect costs to society totaling nearly $200 billion a year”. In addition to the number of those considered affected by a mental health illness within the country, the range and diagnoses of mental health illnesses vary a great deal. While those with severe mental health conditions may be able to be “reliably” diagnosed and treated in the medical community, there are those who cannot afford medical mental health treatment as they may be uninsured and there are also those who may be less easily diagnosed or may be associated with mental disorders which relate to alcoholism and/or substance abuse therefore creating a large and diverse population in need of mental health care. The mental health community has also come to the realization that mental health care treatment costs are escalating while funding is not, resulting in mental health professionals seeking other more cost-effective treatments for their patients but treatments which must also maintain the effectiveness of traditional treatment as well. Since alternate treatments have been studied in the past decade, it has been found that while many alternative treatments are cost-effective, many are also as effective as traditional treatments and some have proven more-effective than traditional therapies. Cost of Treatment for Chemical Dependency

In today's fast paced, technology oriented and capitalistic world the issue of mental health care and , specifically, chemical dependency treatment, has become very cost oriented. Because of the nature of addiction, the addict is often without resources to cover the cost of treatment. "Drug and alcohol dependency are escalating rapidly as a percentage of the total patient population among all social classes. This 9 page paper asserts that cost effective treatment can best be served by assessing the individual's circumstances and providing the least restrictive setting best suited for the attainment of abstinence, both in the immediate future and for the duration of the individual's lifetime. This is best accomplished by a flexible system that allows both inpatient and outpatient services to be accessed, with inpatient services being utilized only when other alternatives have been explored and are found to be lacking in feasibility. Therapists who are counseling Latino men and women must take into account various cultural and ethnic values traditional in Latino families including adherence to machismo, marianismo, persondisimo, simpatia, respeto and familism; all of which define the gender, family and community relations and rely on protection, support, respect and honor. However, in regards to Latinos in the United States, differences between individuals also rely on acculturation levels. In the case of counseling Latina women who have been raped or sexually abused, therapists must take into account not only traditional values of Latinos, but also acculturation levels, concepts of identity, biculturalism, stages of identity development, attitudes on present day sexual influences, health care formality, the current state of family influences and the shifting gender roles among other issues.
