Mehta & The Healing Powers Of The River Sutra In Indian Culture
[ send me this report ]
A 4 page discussion of the Indian myth of the River Sutra. The writer examines this story as being similar in theme to popular American 'old wives' tales.' The healing powers of the river can easily be compared with those of chicken soup-- the capacity to cure is really only mental. The paper goes on to discuss the plight of individual characters along the River Sutra but it is ultimately concluded that the River does not have any healing powers over the seriously ill. [ send me this report ]
6 pages in length. Characteristically reminiscent of Ondaatje's heritage, "Running in the Family" clearly represents the author's personal perception of reality as it not only exists within his own mind, but also how it resides within the confines of society. While the story is intricately intertwined with both past and present, Ondaatje relishes the opportunity to weave a web of secrecy and illusion, not unlike the appearance of his own life. Naguib Mahfouz’s Novels “Palace Walk” and “Midaq Alley”
[ send me this report ]
This is a 4 page paper discussing the novels “Palace Walk” and “Midaq Alley” by Naguib Mahfouz. Cairo-born writer Naguib Mahfouz has written almost forty novels and in 1988 became the first Arab writer to receive the Nobel Prize for literature and since the awarding of the prize, several of his works have been republished in new editions to enjoy worldwide exposure. Some of his early works however still remain his most popular including “Midaq Alley” (1947, 1991) and “Palace Walk” (1956, 1990), Book I of the Cairo Trilogy. “Palace Walk” and “Midaq Alley” tell of two different time periods and use different perspectives to approach the issues of cultural, religious, political and marital life. “Palace Walk” focuses on one family after the First World War and how the traditional religious aspects of married life based on patriarchy govern the family and how the younger generations are changing in their attitudes. These are aggravated by the differences in opinion of the current political controversies about the British presence in Egypt. “Midaq Alley” on the other hand, takes place during the Second World War and tells of how individuals handle living within the impoverished alley and through marital, religious, or political means try to either tolerate their life there or try to get out. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Natsume Soseki/And Then
[ send me this report ]
A 4 page essay that examines Japanese author Natsume Soseki's novel And Then. Examination of this narrative demonstrates the psychological complexity of this work as Soseki relates his protagonist's actions toward his beloved in terms of his coming to grips with his relationship to his father and traditional Japanese values. As this suggests, And Then is more than a love story, as it is also a novel of self discovery, as it deals with the process that Daisuke goes through in discovering his natural self as opposed to the identity prescribed by powerful social norms. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Nazim Hikmet/Human Landscapes from My Country
[ send me this report ]
A 7 page book review that argues that the picture of Turkish society that Nazim Hikmet paints in his epic novel in verse Human Landscapes from My Country is panoramic in scope and psychologically complex, as it seems to encompass, at times, contradictory attitudes toward the old world that was being rapidly left behind in the midst of rapid sociological change prior to and during World War II. Hikmet's imagery often conveys ambiguity toward the legacy and heritage of Islam and the Ottoman Empire, as, on one hand, there is a sense of longing for past glories and grandeur, while, on the other hand, there is rejection of totalitarianism and brutality. Examination of Hikmet's perspective indicates the tensions that accompany huge social change, and suggesting the factors of the past that should be rejected as well as those that should be preserved. No additional sources cited.
