Family Acceptance of Homosexuality

A 6 page essay/research paper that looks at Gloria Feliciano's play "Between Blessings," which is a poignant account of a twenty-eight year old Puerto Rican son, Diego, finally telling his proud, macho, traditionalist father that he is gay. In this work, Feliciano's use of language and dramatic devices serves to expand the scope of the play beyond the immediate domestic situation between father and son and, in so doing, brings up issues of culture and religiosity, specifically the stand of the Roman Catholic Church on homosexuality. This factor of the play is achieved by framing the confrontation between Diego and his father within scenes that feature a family friend, Father David, a priest who is also homosexual. Family Systems Theory And Lesbian Family Members

At issue with the circumstances of having a lesbian family member as it relates to overall interaction are the fears, expectations and disillusions that come rushing to the surface when homophobes are forced to deal with such associations. The writer discusses how utilizing family systems theory as a means by which to overcome the resistance inherent to having a lesbian family member has proven beneficial in establishing the necessary hierarchy, roles and boundaries that are necessary for the healing process to begin. A 26 page paper dissecting the family depicted in the movie “The Birdcage” for the purpose of assessing according to family and nursing theory. The paper briefly describes the film and applicability of nursing theory and intervention both to individual family members and to the family unit as a whole. The largest section of the paper evaluates the family in terms of Friedemann’s Family Assessment (long form). The paper concludes that even though the family depicted (a middle-aged gay couple and a grown heterosexual son) carries a nontraditional appearance, it is nonetheless highly traditional in terms of values and commitment to other family members.
