Determined to make their stance known about the manner in which incumbent Ferdinand Marcos tampered with election results in order to thwart the reality of Corazon Aquino's victory, the people held "massive demonstrations" (Anonymous, 2000) that ultimately averted what would have been a decidedly more violent method of addressing the situation. In the end, Marcos succumbed to the nonviolent approach and "resigned under armed forces and American pressure" (Anonymous, 2000).
